Ash Hill House with the Fujinon 14mm f2.8

Ash Hill House is located near Kilmallock, County Limerick. The Georgian house which is now a B&B, boasts a stunning interior with spacious rooms, checkerboard marble floors and high stucco ceilings throughout the property. The first section of the house was build in the Adam Style Architecture, and was completed in 1780. The upstairs sitting room contains the original palladium and fan windows from this era. The second section of the house was built in Gothic Revival Style by a well known Irish Architect, Charles Frederick Anderson. It was completed in 1833. The current owners, Simon & Nicole are in the process of restoring the south side of the house.

I’ve used Ash Hill as a location for several shoots in the past, and will be using it to host our upcoming portrait & lighting workshops. I thought it would be a great idea to photograph the interior, and let people see just what a fantastic place this is.

Thankfully Liz from Fujifilm Ireland didn’t hesitate to send me the XF 14mm f2.8 for the job. The only downside was that I had to send it back once I was finished. The lens performed incredibly well. It’s sharp throughout the frame with exceptional colour (as is to be expected from a Fujinon lens). The 14mm felt very compact and solid. Most of the images were shot at f5.6.  No distortion correction was applied in post, as I wanted to show what the lens is capable of.

I’m glad that Fujifilm sent me the 14mm and not the 16mm, as I did appreciate having the extra width to play with. The XF 14mm f2.8 can now be found for around 700 Euro, and considering the excellent build quality and optical performance, I believe it’s worth every cent.
